Concrete retaining walls in Winston-Salem NC - a wall that drains and holds your yard

A slope that keeps washing out, or an old wall starting to lean? We build a poured wall with real drainage behind it.

A poured retaining wall is a footing, forms, steel and concrete, with a drain behind it so water can get out. We'll tell you plainly if block would suit your wall better, and when poured is right, we start with the ground under it.

What goes into a concrete retaining wall in Winston-Salem?

A concrete retaining wall in Winston-Salem holds back a slope so you get flat, usable ground and dirt that stays where it belongs. A poured one is built from forms, steel and concrete brought in by truck, and it stands or falls on the footing under it and the drain behind it. The price mostly turns on how tall and long the wall is, how much digging the footing takes, how much steel goes in and how much drainage it needs. The schedule turns on whether a permit is needed, how easily the truck can reach your yard and the weather on pour day. I can't give you a real figure for either until I've seen the slope, so your estimate spells out what's included and what isn't. The state's licensing board for general contractors lists retaining walls under its building contractor classification, so ask anyone bidding your wall to show you that license.

Parts of a concrete retaining wall in Winston-Salem

  • A footing set right

The footing is the wide concrete base the wall stands on. A poured wall is rigid, so if the footing isn't right it can't flex and it cracks instead. Ask anyone bidding your wall how deep the footing sits, because that answer tells you a lot.

  • Forms and steel for tall walls

We build forms, tie in rebar, the steel bars that carry the load inside the concrete, and pour from a truck. That's more work than stacking block, but once a wall gets tall or holds up real weight, poured concrete does the job with a thinner wall.

  • Drainage behind the wall

A good drain takes clean crushed stone, filter fabric to keep dirt out of the stone, a perforated pipe and a clear outlet or weep holes. When we pour a wall, the stone, fabric and pipe are written into the estimate so you can see them and compare quotes.

  • Walls that make room for flat ground

Plenty of walls get built to cut a level spot out of a slope, for a patio, a concrete pool deck or a shop with a concrete floor. We plan the wall and the slab together so the water off both has somewhere to go.

How do you know your yard needs a retaining wall?

  • Your old wall is leaning

A wall that tips forward at the top or bulges in the middle is losing to the dirt behind it, and it's time to have it looked at.

  • Mud on the patio after rain

If every hard rain leaves dirt on the patio, driveway or walk below a slope, the hill is moving a little at a time and won't stop on its own.

  • Cracks or blocks out of line

Cracks running through an old poured wall, or blocks that have slid out of line, mean the wall is carrying more pressure than it was built for.

  • Water seeping through the face

Wet stains on the wall, or water running out along its bottom after rain, tell you water is piling up behind it with no clear way out.

Retaining wall questions we hear

Here are plain answers to what people ask before they hire us for a wall. If yours isn't here, call (336) 276-2960.

Is block or poured concrete better for a retaining wall?

For a typical yard wall, segmental block, which is stacked concrete units, is usually the cheaper and faster build. Poured concrete costs more for the forms, steel and truck, and it earns that cost on a tall wall or one carrying real load. I'll tell you plainly which one your wall needs.

How much does a concrete retaining wall cost in Winston-Salem?

Poured concrete retaining walls in Winston-Salem usually cost about $30 to $40 per square foot of wall face, the side you see once it's built. That's the going rate in the area, not our price, and your estimate lists what's included, like drainage or hauling off an old wall, so you can compare quotes.

Why does a retaining wall need drainage behind it?

Drainage keeps water from building up pressure behind the wall, and a wall holding back wet, heavy dirt is the one that leans or cracks. On our poured walls that drain is the stone, fabric and pipe named in your estimate, and it goes in before the dirt goes back.

Can new drainage fix a retaining wall that's already leaning?

Usually not, because a leaning or cracked wall has already moved and drainage won't move it back. It likely needs rebuilding from the base, with drainage built in from the start. A cracked poured wall is a bigger repair than a few loose blocks, which is why we spend our time on the footing and drain up front.

Do I need a permit for a retaining wall in Winston-Salem?

The city's permit list doesn't name retaining walls, so ask before work starts rather than assume. The City-County Inspections Division issues building permits across Forsyth County outside High Point, Kernersville and King, and takes applications online. We find out which office covers your address, and if your wall needs a permit, we apply and line up the inspections.

How tall can a retaining wall be in Winston-Salem?

A city staff report says the local development code currently limits most retaining walls to ten feet high. A taller grade change gets broken into sections of ten feet or less, with a terrace at least ten feet wide between them. If your lot is steep, we'll plan around that from the first visit.
